New York—Retailers rejoice. Of the men who have already purchased a holiday gift for their significant other, 36 percent bought her jewelry, according to a new study.
The study, by Benenson Strategy Group for Diamond.com and Ice.com, finds that jewelry far outpaced
the second most commonly purchased gift—clothing—which 12 percent of husbands and boyfriends have purchased for their significant other.
Of those surveyed, 69 percent say they are confident their wife or girlfriend would enjoy a gift of fine jewelry. That could be because the wives and girlfriends told them what to buy: 61 percent of husbands and 54 percent of boyfriends say they are told what to buy for the holidays.
Wives are less likely to receive a jewelry gift than girlfriends, according to the study, which finds 49 percent of unmarried men in relationships have bought jewelry, but only 33 percent of married men have bought jewelry.
The survey also shows that men continue to procrastinate their holiday shopping, with 46 percent of men yet to buy a gift for their wife or girlfriend.
