Trek Shuts Down Its German Offices

LANGEN, Germany—Trek, at the end of June, closed its offices in Langen, Germany, and began integrating those functions into its Amherst, Netherlands, offices.

Trek carried out sales, service and accounting duties for the Fisher, Klein and Trek brands out of Langen.

It previously moved its German warrantee functions from Langen to Amherst.

"The German market is very tight right now and it is expensive to lease offices in Langen, so we thought it best if we integrated them into our existing offices in Holland," said Joyce Keehn, Trek's worldwide sales manager.

Many European bike suppliers reported large declines in bike sales during the past year. German bike suppliers reported a 20 percent decline in the first quarter this year.

With the move, which was effective on July 1, Trek laid off all 12 employees from the Langen offices. It will continue to use its team of six outside sales reps in Germany. Trek opened the Langen offices in 1989.

Trek also has offices in Spain and England. It continues its assembly facility in Ireland. Keehn said no changes were planned to those facilities. —Lou Mazzante
