Ohio Cyclists Build Trails On Strip Mine

COLUMBUS, OH—A reclaimed strip-mine in Southeast Ohio is now home to an impressive mountain bike trail. The land's owner, American Electric Power (AEP) Recreation Lands, the Central Ohio Bike Organization (COMBO) and a bevy of mountain bike volunteers joined forces to create the trail. It took 255 volunteers

1,800 hours to build the trail. Since AEP ceased mining at the site, it has worked with various groups to convert the land into a recreational area. The 30,000-acre site has campgrounds, a pond and now a mountain bike trail. COMBO officials said they approached AEP with the plan after the International Mountain Biking Association gave Ohio a "D" grade based on mountain bike advocacy and trail availability in Ohio. Ohio was one of only three states to get such a low grade. AEP and COMBO celebrated opening the new trail with a mountain bike race on Sept. 2.
