California Considers Charging Cyclists To Ride Golden Gate Bridge

SACRAMENTO, CA (BRAIN)--Golden Gate Bridge directors are considering a proposal to levy a $1 toll on pedestrians and bicyclists to cross the famous San Francisco bridge. However, a bill to ban charging cyclists and pedestrians to use any public bridge or roadway was recently passed by the state assembly's

Transportation Committee.

Assembly Bill 748 would ban road and bridge tolls levied against cyclists and pedestrians statewide.

"I understand that we are experiencing a budget crunch, but charging Californians to walk or bike across a public bridge is not the answer. Most bicyclists and pedestrians also own cars and pay taxes for transportation infrastructure. Taxing them again to use the environmentally preferred alternative makes no sense," said Assemblywoman Lois Wolk, (D-Solano) the bill's author, according to the local paper The Reporter.

The bill is also supported by California Bicycle Coalition, San Francisco Bicycle Coalition and the Marin County Bicycle Coalition. The legislation will be heard next in the Assembly Appropriations Committee.
