SANTA FE, NM (BRAIN)--Ride the Rockies Silverton community organizer Helen "Elle" Cote is in critical condition after being struck by a drunk driver Saturday while walking with her husband in downtown Santa Fe.
The driver, John Chavez, has not had a license since 1982 when he was first arrested for driving while intoxicated (DWI). His arrest this weekend was the tenth time he has been charged with DWI. His first five DWI convictions landed him a total of 12 days in jail and $1,150 in fines before New Mexico stiffened drunk driving penalties in 1993.
In the Cote incident, Chavez was charged with causing great bodily harm by vehicle, driving while intoxicated involving great bodily harm, two counts of leaving the scene of an accident, tampering with evidence and driving with a revoked license.
