California Bike Bill Headed To Governor's Desk

SACRAMENTO, CA (BRAIN)--California Governor Gray Davis could sign into law one of the state's most important bicycle bills as early as next week.

The bill, SB 1555, known as the Bicycling and Walking Safety and Promotions bill, was approved the Senate Appropriations

Committee yesterday. The only thing keeping the bill from becoming law is the Governor's approval.

If approved, the bill would tack $5 onto drivers license renewal fees for anyone with more than two points on their driving record. Chris Morfas, executive director of the California Bicycle Coalition, said the fee could generate more than $3 million a year for bicycle promotions and safety.

"We think this is our most important bill ever. It could double California's bike advocacy budget," Morfas said.

It would essentially create a department of bicycling within the state heath department, Morfas said. The money could be spent Safe Routes to School, Bike-to-Work Day promotions and other programs. "The possibilities are enormous," he said.

The California Bicycle Coalition urges everyone in California's bike industry to ask Governor Davis to sign the bill. The group has a sample letter and more information on the bill on its web site, www.calbike.org.
