Developing New Best Buys

"I have been spending the last two or three years in a non-traditional role that allows me to get products into a consumer's life. I learn about the evolution of new products, and it is my passion to leverage this insight and help the company better merchandise products," says Becker, 36, who joined

Best Buy in 1993.

This eclectic experience earned him a spot on this year's list of RETAILTECH's Five Up & Comers.

In his role as a product developer, Becker leads training sessions for company executives, allowing them to experiment with digital music, digital cameras and other technologies. "By letting them get the total customer experience, we enable them to see the benefits of different technologies and areas we should be covering," he says.

Clark is a recognized leader in the company, according to Scott Lien, an information systems leader who reports to Clark. "In the last year, Clark has leveraged his role in IS to become an integral part of the company's consumer technology strategy. The business looks to Clark to set both IS strategy and drive new product development."

In a testament to his managerial skills, people who have worked for Becker are now leaders themselves.

"Clark has a reputation for developing strong and able leaders for the company and unselfishly disbursing them," Lien says.—Deena M. Amato-McCoy
