David Evans, senior vice president and CIO of JCPenney, and Tom Sample, CIO of Carhartt, an apparel manufacturer/retailer, each received Lifetime Achievement Awards in separate ceremonies at the Retail Systems 2000 and VICS 2000 shows held concurrently at McCormick Lakeside Center in April in Chicago.
Evans was cited for his "distinguished career and far-reaching impact on the retail industry." The award was presented during the Second Annual Retail Systems Achievement Awards ceremony at the Retail Systems 2000 show. Both the show and the awards program were organized by Retail Systems Alert Group, Newton Upper Falls, Mass.
Evans is known for leading the effort to create JavaPOS, the standard for Java-based POS applications. He has also managed the development of the JCPenney.com Web site, which grossed $100 million during 1999. When Evans was president of telemarketing for Penney's, he oversaw the creation of 14 phone service centers that employ 9,000 people and initiate 100 million calls a year.
Sample received his Lifetime Achievement Award at the Third Annual VICS 2000 Achievement Awards ceremony, held at the Voluntary Interindustry Commerce Standards (VICS) board dinner during the VICS 2000 show. He was cited for "his dedicated involvement with the VICS executive committee and board." Sample has lead several VICS' committees and served as the group's secretary, treasurer and nominating committee chairman.
The VICS awards, sponsored by E3 Corp., honor outstanding examples of strategic thinking action and leadership that have resulted in more effective supply-chain partnerships.
Other awards: Besides the Lifetime Achievement awards, other awards were presented honoring companies for technology and supply chain accomplishments.
Other Retail Systems Awards were:
• Best In Store Innovation, given to Electronics Boutique for its use of a portable RF device designed to enhance store-level customer service by expediting the checkout process.
• Best In Decisions Systems, presented to The Army Air Force Exchange Services for its ability to restrategize its store, rebuild its hard-line assortments and link its planogramming systems to a computer-aided design application.
• Best In Ecommerce Systems Award, which went to CVS.com for its ability to integrate its Web and brick-and-mortar systems to provide customers with a complete online pharmacy solution.
Other VICS awards presented were: Best in Retail, to Best Buy. for inventory management; Best in Retailer/Supplier Relationship, to J. Sainsbury Supermarkets and Eqos Systems Ltd. for their joint development of CPS to ensure that planning information is coordinated and communicated across the supply chain; and Best in Logistics, to American Greetings for its implementations of a custom automated warehouse and distribution system.
