Barnes & Noble.com is launching a satellite television channel where viewers will be able to use their remote controls to purchase the top 100 best selling books on the Web site.

Barnes & Noble.com

is partnering with digital satellite television service provider DIRECTV and Wink Communications, a provider of interactive television solution, for the venture.

The new interactive shopping service is available on DIRECTV channel 496 to its customers with the "DIRECTV INTERACTIVE Powered by Wink" service.

The retailer says the channel lists book synopses and jacket images and is designed with an easy-to-navigate interface similar to a Web Site. Customers select their books, add them to the shopping cart and complete transactions using a four-digit PIN to charge the credit card on file.

"We are pleased to offer this new distribution channel that delivers on the Barnes & Noble promise to bring the largest selection, best service and fastest delivery to book lovers across the country," says Robert Albert, vice president of strategy & business development, Barnes & Noble.com.

The Barnes & Noble.com channel joins Instant Weather by The Weather Channel, ESPN Today, and the DIRECTV INTERACTIVE Center as the fourth dedicated interactive channel available to customers with the DIRECTV INTERACTIVE service, available on select Wink-enabled DIRECTV Receivers manufactured by Thomson under the RCA brand.

"By partnering with e-commerce companies such as Barnes & Noble.com and Wink, both leaders in their respective businesses, DIRECTV continues to establish itself as the leader in interactive television in the United States," says Brad Beale, senior vice president, DIRECTV. "Such services provide tremendous value and convenience for our customers and incremental business opportunities for DIRECTV and its partners."

Adds Marc Kirshbaum, vice president of strategic development, Wink Communications, "The ease and convenience of buying bestseller books through your television is now a reality. The launch of the Barnes & Noble.com interactive channel on DIRECTV is a great step in Wink's commitment to, and leadership in, providing impulse purchase opportunities to television viewers nationwide."
