SAN RAMON, Calif. -- Twenty-three public school districts in Louisiana and Mississippi will receive aid from Chevron's new "Energy for Learning" program.

Energy for Learning will address the priorities of each school district, providing academic equipment and technology, such as science labs and computers. The program will work to revive student programs that focus on physical and personal skills as well.

"Public school education is crucial to the social and economic vitality of communities and it is our hope that the Energy for Learning program will help communities in Louisiana and Mississippi grow stronger than ever," Dave O'Reilly, chairman and CEO of Chevron, said in a written statement.

The program will also help restore child-care facilities in Mississippi, an extension of Chevron's Daycare Restoration Project that restored 40 child-care centers in the state that were destroyed by Katrina.

In developing the program, Chevron identified non-profit organizations that will assist in the execution of the Energy for Learning program. In Louisiana, which is set to receive $12 million, the organizations will be the Greater New Orleans Foundation and the Community Foundation of Acadiana. Mississippi will receive $6 million, and will utilize the Save the Children and Rebuild Jackson County organizations.
