NEW YORK -- There is 56 percent more caffeine in Starbucks coffee than in 7-Eleven coffee, the
Wall Street Journal reported.
Coffeehouses like Seattle-based Starbucks typically brew their blends much stronger than convenience stores. But a powerful side effect
is unusually high levels of caffeine.
The
Journal hired a Louisiana laboratory to test nine to 12 coffee samples from each of the big coffee brands purchased in Seattle, Chicago, Pittsburgh and New Orleans.
The lab found house blends at Starbucks, Gloria Jean's and other gourmet coffeehouses have an average 56 percent more caffeine than samples tested at 7-Eleven stores and 29 percent more than those at Dunkin' Donuts nationwide, according to the
Journal.
Starbucks' reported average of 320 milligrams of caffeine per 16-ounce cup compares with Folgers, the Procter & Gamble brand, at 170 milligrams on average, the lab's analysis showed.
