Evansville, Ind. City Council Opposes Cold Beer Sales

EVANSVILLE, Ind. -- The Evansville, Ind. City Council has passed a resolution against cold beer and hard liquor sales at convenience stores and gas stations, reported the Evansville (Ind.) Courier & Press. The motion has no legal standing, however, as that jurisdiction belongs to the Indiana

Legislature and state Alcoholic Beverage Commission.

Nothing official has occurred, but City Council president Steve Bagbey told the news source he is hearing that state and local alcohol boards might consider expanding alcohol permits for convenience stores/gas stations.

Hearing that buzz, Bagbey introduced the resolution, and it passed 8-0 on Monday.

Bagbey's concern is that it is extremely difficult to police efforts by minors to buy alcoholic beverages in convenience stores/gas stations. Shoppers do not have to be 21 years old to enter these businesses, as they do a liquor store. In fact, liquor store employees must have training and a permit to sell alcohol. Convenience store employees have no such requirements, according to the news source.
