Yemeni Retailer Assaulted

LINDSAY, Calif. --

A Yemeni convenience store owner was shot and wounded in what officials fear is a pattern of backlash against Middle Easterners following the Sept. 11 attacks.

Fadhl Albusaisa was shot in his right shoulder in

the doorway of his S-Mart convenience store in Lindsay, a small town about 45 miles south of Fresno, according to police. He is expected to survive.

Authorities are investigating the Sept. 29 slaying of another Yemeni shopkeeper in Reedley, about 30 miles away. Abdo Ahmed had received death threats before he was shot.

No arrests have been made in either case. In both cases, the assailant did not try to rob the shopkeeper.

Albusaisa has a wife and children in Yemen and a son living in the United States, according to the Associated Press.
