Spartan taps A&P vet as president, c.e.o.

Midwest retailer and distributor Spartan Stores, Inc. has named Craig C. Sturken, a former c.e.o. of Great Atlantic & Pacific Tea Co.'s Midwest and Atlantic regions, as president and c.e.o. He succeeds James B. Meyer,

who continues as chairman.

Sturken has more than 40 years of retail grocery and wholesale experience. As c.e.o. of A&P's Atlantic region, he led the effort to return the 370-store, 35,000-employee retail operation to sales growth and profitability. He is credited with leading a significant turnaround of the region's revenues and profits. Sturken also served eight years as c.e.o. of the Detroit-based Midwest region, which includes 130 retail stores and 15,000 employees under the Farmer Jack, Food Emporium, and Kohl's supermarket banners.

Before joining A&P, Sturken held executive positions with Grand Union Co. and Hannaford Bros.

Raley's names c.i.o. to guide tech strategy

West Sacramento, Calif.-based Raley's has selected Eric F. G. Wilson to oversee, direct, and execute the company's technology strategy. Wilson brings more than 20 years of global IT operations experience to his new c.i.o. position.

He most recently served as s.v.p. and chief technology officer at Fusionstorm, a technology services company. Prior to that, he was s.v.p. and c.i.o. at Philip Services Corp., a multinational industrial services, laboratory, and engineering services company.

Winn-Dixie selects HR specialist

Winn-Dixie Stores, Inc. has tapped Marion Crawford to be senior director of management and organizational development, reporting directly to the s.v.p. of human resources. Crawford has more than 20 years experience in human resources with companies that include CDI, Rite Aid, GlaxoSmithKline Pharmaceuticals, and Philip Morris.

Ingles Markets appoints v.p. of meat operations

Asheville, N.C.-based Ingles Markets, Inc. has named Robert J. Harvey v.p. of meat operations, filling the vacancy recently created by the death of Joseph G. Ashley. Harvey joined Ingles in 1965 as a meat cutter and went on to serve in various capacities, including store meat department manager, district meat merchandiser, and, since 1983, meat buyer in the corporate headquarters.

"We are very pleased to have such an experienced and capable employee to promote into this position," said Robert P. Ingle, chairman.

Kroger division chief moves up

The Kroger Co. recently announced that M. Marnette Perry has been promoted to group v.p. of perishables merchandising and procurement. She will become an officer of the company.

Since 2000, Perry has been president of Kroger's Columbus division, which is being consolidated with the Michigan division. She joined the retailer in 1972 as a part-time cashier in Portsmouth, Ohio, and went on to become director of produce merchandising and procurement. She also served as v.p. of merchandising in Kroger's Delta division, based in Memphis. In 1997, she was promoted to president of the Michigan division.
