Family Day Effort Gains Retail Support with Promos, Events, Deals

NEW YORK CITY - The list of supermarkets around the country acknowledging Family Day this Sept. 25 continues to grow, with the latest batch planning special programs and promotions to encourage families to make time for a family dinner.

Supervalu retail banners including Acme, Albertsons, biggs, Cub, Farm Fresh, Jewel-Osco, Scott's, Shaw's, Shop 'n Save, and Shoppers Food & Pharmacy will be holding special events in their respective markets. Safeway will hold an educational fair focusing on fitness, drug prevention, and healthy eating. The Safeway Foundation will kick-off a year-round public service campaign to encourage parents to spend more time with their kids by eating healthy, nutritious meals together. The foundation will also donate $100,000 to drug and alcohol abuse prevention programs across the country.

The Ohio Grocers Association (OGA) and the Ohio Food Industry Foundation (OFIF) have posted literature and logos online, for member-retailers to use in promoting Family Day.

Family Day, celebrated on the fourth Monday of every September, was created in 2001 by The National Center on Addiction and Substance Abuse (CASA) as a national effort to promote family dinners as an effective way to reduce substance abuse among children and teens.
