MIAMI and FREEPORT, Bahamas -- Associated Grocers of Florida and the Grand Bahama Port Authority Limited (GBPA) signed an $8 million deal on Monday for an international wholesale distribution warehouse in Freeport, Bahamas, according to published reports.

Associated Grocers, a retailer-owned wholesaler, will use the 100,000-square-foot warehouse to sell food, general merchandise, and health and beauty care products.

Calvin Miller, president and c.e.o. of Associated Grocers of Florida, was quoted as saying that the island's proximity to Florida and its deep-water harbor is ideal for the company. He said the warehouse would be an export operation, with the company distributing merchandise both to the United States and the Caribbean.

Associated Grocers currently services 42 countries, including all of Florida, Georgia, and Alabama in the United States.

Miller said company officials expect to break ground for the warehouse in 60 to 180 days.
