Agriculture Secretary Dan Glickmnan announced the appointment of five new members to the National Organic Standards Board. The following appointees will serve terms beginning immediately and ending Jan. 24, 2006:

* Organic Farmers: George Siemon, LaFarge, Wis. and Dr. Rosalie L. Koenig,

Gainesville, Fla.

* Certifying Agent: James A. Riddle, Winona, Minn.

* Consumer Representatives: Dave Carter, Aurora, Col. and Goldie Caughlan, Seattle, Wash.

The National Organic Standards Board includes four organic farmers, one retailer, two organic handlers, three environmentalists, three consumers, one scientist and one certifying agent.

Internet grocer Peapod, Inc. announced that Andrew Parkinson, founder of the company, will become its chief financial officer and assist in developing the "clicks and bricks" strategy Peapod is pursuing with international food provider Royal Ahold. Parkinson's new position began Jan. 19. Dan Rabinowitz, who will be leaving Peapod to pursue other opportunities, previously held the CFO position.

Gardenburger Inc. announced the appointment of Scott C. Wallace as president and chief executive officer and a director. Wallace comes to the company with two decades of experience in food, packaged goods and consumer products companies. He most recently was CEO of Mauna Loa Macadamia Nut Corporation and was formerly a vice president of sales for E.J. Brach Corporation.

The Grocery Manufacturers of America announced the appointment of Kristin Power as director of state affairs. She will be responsible for creating strategic alliances on key industry issues, such as biotechnology and solid waste management. Before coming to GMA Power was director of government affairs for the Agricultural Council of California. GMA also announced the hiring of Tyler Cluverius as manager of industry affairs. Cluverius previously worked at the American Society for Engineering Education where he managed the society's web-based education initiatives and academic directories.

Attila Pavlath, an emeritus lead scientist at USDA, has been elected president of the American Chemical Society, the world's largest scientific society. His term began Jan. 1. Pavlath has published more than 100 journal articles, authored 25 patents, and written several books and book chapters. His current research focuses on developing biodegradable packaging materials.

VolumeFoods Inc., an e-commerce solutions provider in the foodservice industry, announced the appointment of Eric Kassan as chief technology officer. Kassan will oversee all areas of technology and engineering for the company, including the development and refinement of VolumeFoods' Internet-based sales automation/trading system and foodservice specific e-commerce solutions.
