Beringer Wine Estates Purchases Castello di Gabbiano.
The 900-year old Tuscan wine estate has been purchased from the current owners, Rino and Raynelle Arcaini. The estate sits on 254 acres with 120 acres planted in Sangiovese, Merlot, and Cabernet Sauvignon. Included in the sale is the historic castle.
Castello di Gabbiano dates to 1100
Beringer has been the sole importer of Gabbiano wines since 1994. "Italian imports are enjoying tremendous success in the U.S., and as our relationship with the Arcainis evolved, purchasing the Castello seemed like a natural progression from importers to guardians of the property." said Beringer Wine Estates Chairman and CEO, Walt Klenz. Giancarlo Roman will remain as winemaker at Castello di Gabbiano and Ed Sbragia, winemaster for Napa Valley's Beringer Vineyards, will continue to work closely with Roman as he has done for the last several years.
The Napa winery also announced that it has purchased "Cerbaiola," a 57-acre property located in Chianti Classico, approximately 10 miles from Castello di Gabbiano. Currently, 15 acres of vineyard are planted to Sangiovese, with plans to plant another 10 acres in the future.
Terms of the agreements were not disclosed.
