About 25% of the original cafeteria was "gutted" and a design consultant brought in to create the Muse Underground Cafe, according to Land.
Students descend twisting steps to enter it, much as one would enter the London Underground. Upon entering the 380-seat cafe
(open 11 a.m.to 9 p.m.), students are greeted by an illuminated 40- x 30-in. picture of London Bridge at night.
Custom signs have been made for the two in-house concepts, based on Underground signs. Themed '20s and '30s posters advertising the London Underground are permanently displayed, and illuminated advertising adorns the walls featuring companies such as Guess Jeans and VISA. "We're not charging for the advertising," says Land, "we're just trying to create an atmosphere."
Three T.V.s play constantly in the cafe, one with an England-theme, showing Monty Python, Benny Hill, The Beatles, etc. and two screening U.S. cable channels.
