New Mexico school dist. switches to ARAMARK

Carlsbad Municipal Schools, NM, switched from self-op to contractor ARAMARK, effective Aug. 1, following an rfp targeted to address "quality" issues, according to superintendent Vernon Asbill.

"Most contracted school districts were losing money, but we operated with

a cash balance. Outsourcing is on the horizon for school districts, and we're looking to tap into ARAMARK's expertise and buying power."

The bid was awarded following proposals from previous self-op management and contractors at the 14 school district.

Better food: "We were looking for a plan to improve food quality, which was pointed out as a concern in a previous survey."

"ARAMARK will implement new programs and upgrade marketing efforts at each site, in the hopes of enticing even greater participation," according to Barry Page, ARAMARK regional svcs. consultant.

Besides increasing food quality and participation beyond last year's average of 8,400 meals per day, ARAMARK has agreed to retain all current foodservice workers—their wages and benefits will not be affected by the new contract.

The 7,000 enrollment closed-campus district will target its high school participation by expanding the cafeteria and introducing new food options—including signature brands Grill Works, World's Fare and the Rainbow Collection at elementary schools.

Kiosks next: Plans are also underway to set up satellite retail kiosks to maximize availability for students.

"One of ARAMARK's ideas is to allow teachers to call in their orders to the cafeteria to have the meals delivered to them."

Catering is another opportunity for development, he points out.

ARAMARK already oversees school foodservice in New Mexico at Moriarty, Aztec, Lovington, Ruidoso and Farmington.
