Jewelry Retailers

The majority of the 27,000 independent retail jewelers operating in the United States are located in prominent downtown locations or bustling strip shopping centers. A growing number of retailers, about one in every five jewelers, are now open for business in free-standing locations, according to JA.

Approximately 9.8 percent of retail jewelers operate inside malls.

As was the case in 2000, U.S. jewelers continued to contend with slow sales and flat profit margins in 2001, as overall profitability remained level at 6.1 percent. Despite the drop in profits, retailers' median gross margins improved slightly last year, though the figures still fall below the figures enjoyed by jewelers in the 1980s.
