Moscow (December 1, 2000)—Russian mining conglomerate Norilsk Nickel has proposed several projects to the Mongolian government, as part of a plan to jointly develop the country's copper resources.
According to reports, the Prime-Tass news agency claims that Dzhonson
Khagazheyev, CEO of the Norilsk Mining Company, Norilsk's core unit, sent a letter to Mongolian Prime Minister Nambariin Enkhbayar about the proposed joint venture.
Prime-Tass also reported that Norilsk is examining whether to become involved in upgrading the production facilities at Erdenet, a Russian-Mongolian joint venture. Erdenet, which produces approximately 400,000 tonnes of copper concentrate per year, is Mongolia's most important economic asset.
