E-mails about new products are more successful than simple transactional and sales messages, according to retailers polled in shop.org's State of Retailing Online 2007 survey. Indeed, 73 percent of retailers e-mail customers about new products, and 51 percent say the method is very effective.

Last year, 51 percent of online retailers surveyed allocated the majority of their marketing dollars toward online customer acquisition tactics. An additional 24 percent went to online customer retention programs.

The most effective marketing tactic for acquiring customers: paid search.

The most effective and budget-friendly tool for retaining customers: E-mail marketing.
