CVS Corp. named Chris Bodine, 46, to the position of exec vp, merchandising and marketing, replacing Larry Zigerelli, 43, who left the company to explore other opportunities. Bodine joined CVS in 1986 and since March 2000 has served as senior vp, merchandising.

During his tenure at CVS, Bodine has held such positions as vp of loss prevention, vp/merchandising manager for general merchandise, vp of merchandising, and senior vp of health care services.

Office Depot appointed Jocelyn Carter-Miller as exec vp, chief marketing officer. Carter-Miller, formerly corporate vp, cmo of Motorola, will report directly to Bruce Nelson, Office Depot's chairman and ceo. In her new role, Carter-Miller will have responsibility for the company's marketing efforts across its retail, contract, catalog and e-commerce businesses. Carter-Miller succeeds Mike Haaf, former evp of marketing, who has decided to leave the company to pursue other opportunities. In other Office Depot news, the company appointed Samuel E. Mathis Jr. to the newly created position of vp of diversity. Mathis, formerly vp of diversity & community affairs at Darden Restaurants, will report directly to Jay Crosson, exec vp of human resources.

Target expects to open a 182,120 sq. ft. Super Target in Lakeville City, MN, during October 2002 and a 125,000 sq. ft. discount store in Sherwood, OR. The company, which operates more than 1,300 discount department stores in 46 states, is also proposing a location in McAllen, TX. The average Target store occupies 126,000 sq. ft. and the average Super Target occupies 177,000 sq. ft.

Wal-Mart plans to open as many as three Neighborhood Markets in the Tennessee area, including a 40,000 sq. ft. location under construction in Horn Lake, TN. The chain has plans for nine Neighborhood Markets in the Memphis, TN area within a few years. Wal-Mart expects to open a total of 15 to 20 Neighborhood Markets, 50 Wal-Marts and 185 Supercenters in 2002. The company is also proposing a 149,000 sq. ft. Wal-Mart in Plainfield, IL; a 185,300 sq. ft. Supercenter in Hood River, OR; a 184,435 sq. ft. Supercenter in Citrus Park, FL, and a location at the Millbrook Marketplace in Algonquin, IL. Wal-Mart operates 1,651 discount stores and 1,026 supercenters in addition to 25 neighborhood markets.

Fred Meyer is proposing a 165,232 sq. ft. store on 15.6 acres in Sandy, OR. The supercenter chain currently operates more than 2,300 supermarkets, price-impact warehouses and multi-department stores in 31 states.
