WOONSOCKET, RI — CVS Corp. on Thursday said profit rose 18% in the 1Q as sales at its pharmacies open for at least a year rose almost 9%, according to an Associated Press report.
The drugstore chain said net income available to common shareholders rose to $286.2 million from $241 million a year ago.
Sales rose 35% to $9.18 billion from $6.82 billion. Comps rose 8.2%, while pharmacy comps rose 8.8% and front-end comps increased 6.9%. CVS said the comps results benefited from a shift of the Easter holiday to March this year.

"I am very pleased to report that the aggregate sales results of the 1,100 former Eckerd stores are trending positive to last year, having been in steep decline at the time we acquired them," said Tom Ryan, chairman, president, and ceo in a statement. Michaels Stores 1Q Sales Increase 13.1%; Comps Increase 7.8%IRVING, TX — Michaels Stores reported today that total sales for the 1Q were $821.0 million, a 13.1% increase over last year's $725.9 million. Comps for the quarter increased 7.8% on a 2.2% increase in average ticket, a 4.9% increase in transactions, and a 0.7% increase in custom frame deliveries. A favorable currency translation, due to the stronger Canadian dollar, contributed approximately 0.4% to the average ticket increase for the quarter, according to a Reuters report.
Michael Rouleau, president and ceo, said, "We are extremely pleased with our strong comps performance throughout the quarter that builds on our solid fiscal 2004 1Q comps increase of 6%. Higher inventory in-stock levels in our stores, strength in yarn sales, improved results from promotional activities and continued improvements in store merchandising execution all contributed to our excellent comps results. Our best performing geographic regions were our Pacific, Southeast, and Northern zones and our best departmental performances came in our Yarn, Paper-crafting, General Crafts, Wedding & Ribbon, and Kids Crafts categories."

"We are pleased to report a strong start to our fiscal 2005," said Steven G. Miller, Big 5's chairman, president and ceo. We believe that we are well positioned to continue our consistently solid performance in the 2Q and throughout the year."

Duckwall-Alco April Sales Down 1.4%; Comps Down 3.9%ABILENE, KS — Duckwall-ALCO Stores today announced that its sales from continuing operations for the four weeks ended May 1, 2005 (fiscal month of April) decreased approximately 1.4% to $30.9 million, compared with $31.3 million in the prior-year month, according to a PrimeZone report.
The 20 stores previously announced as closing along with other stores where the decision has been made to close them by the end of the 1Q are excluded from sales from continuing operations.
Comps decreased approximately 3.9% during April 2005 when compared with the year-earlier period. ALCO stores, which generate approximately 93% of the company's total revenues, recorded a 4.1% comps decrease, while the Duckwall division recorded a decrease of 1.3% in comps. Comps this year in March benefited from a shift in the timing of Easter, which occurred the fourth week of fiscal March this year, compared to the first week of April last year. Because of this shift, the best way to evaluate the company's comps performance is to combine March and April sales, which decreased 0.4%.
For the 13 weeks ended May 1, 2005, sales from continuing operations increased 2.8% to $98.0 million from $95.4 million last year, and comps decreased 0.1%.
