Barnes & Noble.com Names Toulantis CEO

Leonard Riggio, chairman of Barnes & Noble.com, announced today the appointment of Marie J. Toulantis to the position of ceo, effective immediately. Toulantis had been president and coo of Barnes & Noble.com since May 2001, and previously served as the company's cfo.

has done an outstanding job in helping build Barnes & Noble.com into the leading Internet site of any retailer worldwide," said Riggio. "Marie's extensive financial background, her intimate knowledge of the book business, her creativity in marketing, and her unique ability to motivate and lead people make her the ideal choice for ceo of Barnes & Noble.com."

Toulantis has played a central role in the growth and success of Barnes & Noble.com. She oversaw the company's successful initial public offering in May 1999, the largest Internet offering at the time, and during the last three years she has been involved in every aspect of the company's online business. She first joined Barnes & Noble in 1997 as exec vp of finance and later became cfo. Prior to joining Barnes & Noble, Toulantis was a senior vp at Chase Manhattan Bank.
