Many years ago I read Daniel Fuchs's Brooklyn trilogy--Summer in Williamsburg, Homage to Blenholt, and Low Company. I was impressed then by how sensitive the books based on his adolescence were to the sounds and smells of the Brooklyn Jewish ghetto, to the colloquial nuances of neighborhood conversation, and to his Americanized immigrant sons' hunger to escape what they saw as the "deadness" of their "suffocating" Brooklyn enviro
