One of the things I love about working in my particular office is our broker's approach to training and business growth. She's been selling real estate for the better part of thirty five years. I'm pretty certain nothing surprises her any more. In my experience, we are by far amongst the most current and best educated agents in our community when it comes to knowledge of ever changing contracts and business practice. And yet, now in her mid sixties, here is a woman who never stops learning or growing. I've watched her shed a significant amount of weight, embark on a self-empowerment journey leading her bungy-jumping over the edge, fasting in the wilderness, breaking boards with her fists. The list is endless.
We have weekly training classes ranging in theme from contract issues to mind-mapping (We all gather round over pizza, and with glue stick and scissor in hand, set about eviscerating magazines in search of images and words which speak inspirationally to us, then constructing them into colorful collages to be displayed prominently in our personal workspaces so we may remind ourselves of dreams and goals). For some this may sound a little woo-woo. I believe, however, that knowledge and growth comes to those who are prepared to receive. Thus, I am compelled to overcome my own suspicions, preconceptions and general inhibitions to inhale these activities deeply, drawing strength from them with every breath.
In one of last week's classes, my broker distributed a list, "The Top 501 Inspirational Quotes of All Time" by David Riklan. As the title suggests, it is the proverbial laundry list of inspiring utterances from the famous, wise, enlightened and sometimes anonymous throughout history. It serves to remind us that life and all its experience can be distilled down to pristine, often times surprising simplistic expressions of common sense and practical thinking.
Well, I'm inspired! Inspired to share with you my subjective take on five hundred and one of the pithiest, most profound, humorous and perhaps "slap your forehead, duh, that's so obvious" quotes of all time. Each of them certainly relates to how we approach the day, our lives, businesses, relationships, life in general. There's a reason this material is published time and time again. It resonates.
1.) Just Do It! Nike - So simply stated and yet infinitely powerful. Is it time to go to the gym? Just do it. Your monthly mailer rapidly approaching and you don't feel like stuffing envelopes? Just do it. Are quarterly taxes looming around the corner, needing to be filed? Just do it. How about those old files building up on your desk, leaving no room for new business? Clear them out. Just do it. No matter what the task, if it feels onerous and is pushing all your procrastination buttons, but you know it has to get done, stop making excuses. JUST DO IT!
I love quotes of all kinds. Some of them are truly inspirational and some do just make you want to slap your forehead like the do on the V8 commercials. Nike is one of the best...Just Do It. How utterly simple but yet so inspiring at the same time. I think the most inspiring quote I know is "I have a dream that one day this nation will not judge one by the color of their skin, but by the content of their character." Of course, we all know who said that one. Inspirational quotes can be for all aspects of life. There are many inspirational leaders that will tell you how important affirmations are. Write them down. Put them on your mirror, on your desk, in your car, where ever you might see them and think, oh, I can do this, etc. Personally, I think the Golden Rule should be plastered on everything we see! I know that would be overkill, but some people have never learned it. "Do unto others as you would have them do unto you." Can it really get any simpler than that??
