Unique inspection, fix for California watermain.

In less than five days in May, 18 prestressed concrete sections of a major watermain were replaced in Orange County, CA. Officials of the Metropolitan Water District of Southern California decided on the whirlwind project schedule after electromagnetic inspection detected weakened steel reinforcement

wires in the 20-year-old pipeline. The Metropolitan Water District owns 175 miles of prestressed pipeline and ordered the $4.5-million inspection, removal and replacement of about 360 feet of the 26-mile-long Allen-McCullouch Pipeline. The work was a precautionary measure following the rupture in December of a 10-foot-long 67-inch-diameter prestressed concrete section.
