World's largest elliptical flexible pipe-to-manhole connector announced.

The world's largest elliptical flexible pipe-to-manhole connector was recently installed on the Michigan City High School Drainage Project in Michigan City, IN. The project utilized 78-, 72-, 66- and 54-inch round concrete pipe and 54-inch equivalent elliptical concrete pipe. The pipe, manufactured by Independent Concrete Pipe Company, was designed to match with box structures with flexible connectors manufactured by the Dyer Vault company. The structures weighed between 22,000 to 25,000 pounds, which was significantly less than what would have been required for regular round manhole configuration.

Lakeside Construction handled the installation. The owner, John Pavy, commented "We had to handle the pipe and structures in difficult terrain and the pipe to structure connections needed to be made quickly and backfilled immediately."

Field Superintendent Allen Zeedyk added "We also had to install a pipe with the traditional mortar joint. Comparing the traditional installation with the flexible connector really highlighted the advantages of using the gaskets in storm structures. Installing the 54-inch equivalent elliptical pipe was so easy it was hard to believe it was a first."

Contractors using flexible connectors to connect pipe to structures report quality and productivity improvements. Pipes can easily be connected to the structure then backfllled immediately.
