Local authorities have new powers under the Local Government Act, to work to improve the quality of life. They are required under Part 1 of the Act to prepare Community Strategies to improve the well-being
Government has written to leading UK companies urging them to "Make a Corporate Commitment" to manage resource use more effectively and to quantify improvements in business and environmental performance. It wants to see measurement of greenhouse gas emissions, waste and water usage and targets set for cutting raw material use and implementing green travel plans. Guidelines have already been published on Waste and Reporting of Greenhouse Gas Emissions.
