George Yount, sector vice president of ship construction for Northrop Grumman Ship Systems in Avondale, has been named Man of the Year by the Propeller Club of the United States, Port of New Orleans.Yount will be recognized for leadership in promoting the industry at their annual Maritime Day Gala.
Rear Adm. Yount will be the 47th Man of the Year.During his tenure, Yount has transformed Avondale into one of the nation's premier shipyards and involve it in the community.Prior to joining Northrop Grumman Ship Systems in January 2002, Yount completed a distinguished 33-year career in the U.S. Navy where his service included Deputy, Commander for Integrated, Warfare Systems for the Naval Sea Systems Command; Director, Supportability, Maintenance and Modernization of the staff of Chief Naval Operations; Commander, Naval Ordinance Center; and Commander, Puget Sound Naval Shipyard. His career included service on surface ships and submarines with assignments on four ships. More than 25 years of his career was spent as a naval engineer with assignments in five different shipyards and two repair activities. His military awards include the Navy Distinguished Service Medal, Legion of Merit with two gold stars, Meritorious Service Medal with four gold stars, Navy Commendation Medal with three gold stars and Combat V.Northrop Grumman Avondale is part of Northrop Grumman Ship Systems headquartered in Pascagoula, Miss. NGSS also includes Ingalls Shipbuilding and Ship Systems Full Service Center in Pascagoula. NGSS, which employs 17,000 shipbuilders primarily in Louisiana and Mississippi, is a full service systems companies for the design, engineering, construction and life-cycle support of major service ships for the Navy, Coast Guard and international navies and for commercial vessels of all types.In recognition of the Coast Guard's valiant rescue efforts in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, the Propeller Club will also honor representatives of the Commander, Eighth Coast Guard District, Coast Guard Marine Safety Office New Orleans, and Coast Guard Air Station New Orleans.The 2006 Maritime Day Gala will be held at the Plimsoll Club in the World Trade Center with cocktails served at 6:30 p.m. May 26 followed by dinner at 7:30 p.m.
