Progress made on sulphur free fuels.

Proposals which have been on the table since 2001 on the introduction of sulphur free petrol and diesel have now been approved by the European Parliament and the Council of Ministers. The measures are intended to cut emissions of nitrogen oxides and particles and are due to be phased in by January

2009. From January 2005 petrol and diesel fuel with a sulphur content of less than 10ppm will be available. The Commission says that non- sulphur petrol will mean an improvement in fuel economy of between 1%-5% compared with vehicles powered by a sulphur based fuels.
