Ilda Figueiredo MEP, raised concerns about the closure of the ECs programme for protection of forests against fires in the European Parliament. The EC's programme has in the decade to 2003 provided 123.6m Euros through the centrally managed programme, for financing fire prevention measures in high risk regions (including firefighting resources), measures for the replanting of burnt areas, the establishment of a European forest fire prevention centre and more.
The programme has now been closed as the budget has been withdrawn. However, Mr Fischler MEP, was quick to point out that the programme has been closed as the statutory basis for the prevention of forest fires has changed, with responsibility for a number of forest protection measures passing from the Directorate General for Agriculture to the Directorate General for the Environment. Funding can now be sought for measures to protect against forest fires through amendments to rural development programmes (RDPs).
