Kansas: SENATE SUPPORTS PRIVATE PRISONS

A Senate committee recommended approval of a bill that would allow the construction of a private prison despite objections from the officers' union.

The Kansas Association of Public Employees said private prisons don't provide sufficient training for officers and condone substandard conditions.

Corrections

secretary Roger Werholtz, who remained neutral on the bill, told lawmakers the prison population of about 9,155 inmates is growing faster than projected and now requires rentals in other states.
