Michigan: Oakland will use 'tether' system

The Oakland County Board of Commissioners approved a grant of $421,138 for the County Corrections Department to test a high-tech tether system on work-release inmates that doesn't require probation officers to make spot checks.

Judges across the state have been using the tether system for about

18 months, ordering nearly 150 suspects and inmates to wear the tethers as a condition of their bond or probation.

The new tethers allow closer scrutiny than older ones worn by more than 2,800 felons in Michigan, according to State Department of Corrections.
