Transit-Ticket Dispenser Includes Explosives Detector

To help prevent terrorist attacks on public transportation, a fare-card vending machine senses if potential passenger has been in direct, recent contact with explosives simply by analyzing person's fingertip. Analysis occurs simultaneously during the vending operation, without requiring additional time for the transaction.

If detecting trace residue of explosives on individual's fingertip, the machine automatically alerts law-enforcement authorities about the potential threat. Capabilities include capturing and transmitting a digital image of the suspected passenger, pinpointing the exact location of boarding gate, and instantly locking turnstiles at the transit station and surrounding areas to prevent entry.

The prototype machine is a joint creation of two companies: GE Security (Newark, CA) provides Itemiser FX technology to detect explosives, while Cubic Corp. (San Diego, CA) provides the automated fare-card dispenser.

Plans are currently underway to implement pilot programs for the machine.
