Work is underway to create a fishing pond at Stearns Quarry, located in Chicago, IL.

Two projects to reclaim unused land will fill the Chicago Park District's busy agenda

for 2006. One such project centers on Stearns Quarry, which was an active limestone quarry from approximately 1830 through 1969. After 15 years of use as a landfill, the quarry is being transformed into a dynamic, 27-acre park. Amenities will include a fishing pond, interpretive wetlands, trails, an athletic field, running track, and sledding mound. Quarry walls will remain in the park for historic preservation and architectural impact.

In Chicago's North Lawndale community, the park district is transforming three acres of vacant land into an active park, complete with athletic fields, a running track, playground, welcoming entrances, and green space. This project will enhance recreational opportunities for the city's west-side neighborhood.

The Chicago Park District manages more than 7,300 acres of park land and sponsors thousands of events and programs.
