Plans for 2006 include adding finishing touches to a new skate park, located on the west side of the city's Ackley Park. City workers added initial skateboard ramps at the end of 2005, and ramps for advanced skaters will be installed in the early months of 2006. One of the ramps consists of a 16-inch box rail that challenges seasoned skateboarders. A new set of three-foot stairs was also added to the tournament-quality skate park, which measures 12,000 square feet.
Park designers created a layout that enables easy gliding from one ramp to another. To accommodate street hockey, a 20- by 85-foot course will be located at the south end of the skate park.
Ackley Park hosts summer activities such as fishing, swimming, tennis, and baseball. In addition, the park's miniature golf course, as well as train and carousel rides, can be reserved for private parties. Featured winter attractions include an enchanting "Christmas in the Park," which showcases one of the largest displays of Christmas lights in Oklahoma.
