CIRCLE 400 ON READER CARD OR GO To WWW.THRU.TO/GPNEWS ALERT DRIVERS TO HAZARDS VIA TRANSMITTERS AND RECEIVERS Developed by scientists at Georgia Tech Research Institute, Safety Warning System (SWS) consists of microwave transmitters and receivers that alert motorists within 1 -mile radius to potential road hazards. Transmitters mount on mobile or stationary locations (such as light bars of emergency vehicles), while operating on the same frequency as traffic radar. Receivers (pictured above) install on vehicle's dashboard or windshield, ready to lock onto the coded signal relayed by transmitter. Signals can trigger 1 of 64 pre-programmed messages. To alert driver to hazard, receiver sounds audible warning, and L.E.D. readout displays message in vehicle. Messages can include warnings about hidden intersections, road detours, police vehicles in pursuit, ice-covered areas, and other conditions. Transmitter can follow initial message with a second, different message, or receiver can even announce alerts using digitized or real voices. Each transmitter measures 4Y2 ins. long, 6 ins. wide, and 2 ins. high; runs on a 12-v., gel-cell, or solar battery. Receiver measures about 4Y2 ins. long, 2A ins. deep, and 1 in. high; runs off vehicle's cigarette lighter.
