Yale sociologist Wendell Bell has received a Bloomberg Award in
Futures Excellence for 2000. The annual award recognizes individuals at
the national and international level who promote a vision of the future
established on principles of social justice.
Bell, who serves on the editorial
advisory board of Futures
Research Quarterly, has taught a course entitled "Social Change and
the Future" at Yale. He is the author of the two-volume The
Foundations of the Futures Field, published in 1996. In this work, Bell
focuses on developing the field's ethical foundations. Moving
beyond cultural relativism, he explains how universal human values came
to exist and how they ought to be changed to permit all people to live
good, long lives in the coming global society.
The Bloomberg Awards were initiated in 1997 in honor of educator
Warner Bloomberg, a proponent of interdisciplinary approaches to urban
planning and futures studies.
