Unmarried Motherhood.

U.S. women under 30 who become pregnant for the first time are now more likely to be unmarried than married, reports the U.S. Census Bureau.

The proportion of first births that were conceived out of wedlock to women aged 15-29 nearly tripled in the past six decades, rising to 53% in

1990-1994. Premarital first births rose to 41% in the early 1990s, up from 8% in the early 1930s.

For younger women, the proportion who conceive or give birth out of wedlock is higher: 85% for white women 15-19 and 98% for African Americans.

The increase in unmarried motherhood has been accompanied by a decline in use of terms likely to illegitimacy and bastard.
