A solution for global warming?

I read with interest the article "Climate Threatens Mass Extinction" in the July-August 2004 issue (World Trends & Forecasts, Environment). The problem of greenhouse-gas emissions, their effect on global warming, and the ensuing ramifications have long been issues with NASA and the Urban

Heat Island Project. As one speaker indicated at the North American Summit for Environmental Issues in 2002, there are many relatively simple steps that, if taken, would greatly alleviate the problem.

He suggests, for example, coating all the flat roofs in North America with a highly reflective coating. This would have the same effect on our environment as would removing all the cars from the road. Furthermore, the use of white or very light shingles on the roofs of individual houses would have a great impact on global warming. The use of light colored concrete in large parking lots in addition to planting trees in those parking lots would also help eliminate the "hot spots" that create detrimental clouds of carbon dioxide.
