Skilled Worker Crisis

According to a survey of automotive executives, industry will be particularly hard hit by the looming skilled labor shortage, costing individual companies an average $50 million over thenext five years. The research was commissioned by Advanced Technology Services Inc. (ATS: Peoria, IL).

Most

respondents say that the high cost items are recruiting and training new employees. Other cost areas are missed production, paid overtime, and lost customer satisfaction.

Most auto executives said they would outsource an entire recruiting department or job function to avoid doing it in-house. A majority, 53%, said that outsourcing production machine maintenance would provide the most productivity gains. This is because when machines break or aren't working it costs thousands of dollars. Over onequarter of automakers surveyed disclose the cost to be as high as $25,000-$50,000 per minute.
