Google released featured content for Google Earth from the David Rumsey collection, one of the largest private map collections in the U.S. The collection integrates historical cartographic works dating back to the 17th century, including 16 historical maps from Cassini's Globe of 1790, a map of Africa

from 1787, and a 1710 JapaneseChinese map of Asia. When these maps are overlaid with other data layers in Google Earth, users can view details about how the places have evolved over time and how people's perception of geography has also changed.

In other news, Google released Gmail for mobile devices. This freely downloadable Java application gives users of Gmail the same look and feel of the service through a fast, feature-rich interface for handhelds.
