India loses coke from China.

Date: Sunday, February 1 2004

Indian steel mills are to lose all their supplies of coke and coking coal from China, in a move by the Chinese to restrict their supplies for domestic consumption. China, itself, imports some 6Mt of coke per year from Australia towards its present 250Mt/y steel output.

China was the

main source of coking coal for India. It has been importing 3Mt/y of low ash coke as well as a total 15Mt of coking coal from China, Australia, South Africa and Indonesia. Total coal imports are 22Mt.

The price of coke at the close of 2004 was Rs8500/t (US$187/t) and of coking coal Rs5500 (US$121/t).

India will be seeking alternative supplies and further develop its limited cokable coal reserves.
