Anyone who knows anything about Black life in the United States knows the
importance of the church to the community. The church has been -- and
continues to be -- a mainstay of what it means to be Black and proud in
this country. It has served as a source of our people's strength in times
of trial -- from slavery days until now. Black people go to church for
