Happy Mother's Day, Working Moms

Sunday, May 11 2008

 Aloha!

To all of my working mother readers, happy mothers day! I hope that today is a wonderful, relaxing, stress-free and quiet day for you.

This week I was missing in action: We took a family vacation to the island of Kaui in Hawaii. If you haven't been, pack your bags and get there. The island is somewhat remote, quiet and tranquil. Flowering trees line the roads. You can pick mangos in trees that dot the landscape. We saw waterfalls and rainbows. We swam in the water and the pool, and the family reconnected.

I learned alot about our family and other people while away; well, I learned it or rediscovered it, I suppose, since I often think that you learn things early on and as you age you just simply rediscover them, or look at them in a new light.

I learned I can live without Internet access, and that I should, at least a few nights a week.

I learned we can all adapt to new surroundings, sleeping arrangements, foods, and time schedules.

I learned that if we see things in a new way, we learn a lot more than if we go through with our blinders on.

I learned that Hawaain time is a great time to be on, and that I should set my watch to it as often as I can.

I learned that if  I give up some of the control I wish to have when it comes to what we are going to do and when we are going to do them, things are going to still be fine, and probably a lot more enjoyable.

I learned that my family will always be the most important thing.

I learned that sometimes the only thing an out of control four year old needs is a lot more one on one attention.

I learned that hugs cure all wounds, even rock scrapes and broken hearts.

I learned that shave ice and ice cream will not put ten pounds on me if eaten in moderation.

For now, for mother's day, I must unpack and grocery shop and do some laundry. You know, the things that mothers do. I grumble about them all sometimes, but in reality, I enjoy each task, because I am doing them for the people I love the most.

Aloha!
