MIT honors student for biocide packaging. (Machinery).

A high-school senior from Maryland has won an apprenticeship from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) for developing paper with antimicrobial properties derived from fenugreek, an ancient Indian herb. Kavita Shukla was granted a patent for the paper, which has extended the shelf

life of food up to six weeks in experiments. Shukla conceived the idea after a remedy of ground fenugreek seeds kept her safe from contaminated water during a visit to her grandparents in India. Winning the Lemelson-MIT High School Invention Apprenticeship will pair Shukla with a leading researcher who will serve as her "invention mentor."
