While some businesse owners gnash their teeth about NH's "brain drain" and the lack of skilled of workers, Fidelity Investments in Merrimack is doing something about it. Fidelity has partnered with Southern NH University in Manchester to cultivate future employees and actively recruit them.
Among the certifications many of its employees need is the Series 7 designation, for which Fidelity provides in-house training. Fidelity has worked with the School of Business at Southern NH University to offer the Series 7 Certification training through SNHU's Center for Financial Studies, so students can earn their certification while earning their degree and can immediately hit the ground running in the financial services sector.
"This will provide more great career opportunities for students in the state," says Thomas O'Rourke of Fidelity. "This is an opportunity to reverse the brain drain."
With 4,900 employees, Fidelity is one of the largest employers in the state and needs to fill between 500 and 1,000 jobs annually. That's why Fidelity has started a series of signature networking events at SNHU to allow Fidelity's business leaders and hiring managers to meet the university's top students. The networking events are by invitation only, with students selected by the school. Fidelity held two such events in March and will hold another this month. The networking events allow Fidelity to reach out to students and inform them about internships and employment opportunities.
"We do, and will continue to find great talent here," O'Rourke says of SNHU.
David Fehr, director of the Center for Financial Studies at SNHU, says the partnership creates high value-added programs for students.
